Among children, it is important that they receive a clear message from their parents and elders.  This means that established norms should be adhered to at all times and that there should be no changing of stance no matter what the consequences might be.  This will help eliminate confusion in the minds of younger people and help them create a mold a foundation of what is true and right.

The Librarian Certification and ProgramsLibrarian licensure or certification is utilized by states for recognizing those that have completed the required program for their chosen area, successfully passed a certification examination, and / or met all requirements. This licensure will allow librarians to function in a specific or a variety of working environments and will be a major factor in determining the librarian salary. Every state has varying requirements for librarians to obtain the necessary certification.

For example, majority of states require that librarians be certified teachers in a subject area prior to them being awarded certification. On the other hand, some states may require that librarians have a Master’s Degree. Although most states may honor a certification given by a different state, you should first ensure with the state’s certifying authorities to check if your certificate will be accepted or transferable if you move to another state.

When you have a Master’s Degree however, you also have more employment choices with other library types so career advancement, mobility, location, and others should also be taken into consideration. On your search for programs to take in order to be a librarian, you will see that different programs are also accredited by different governing bodies. Most states also require a degree from an ALA accredited program for librarians to work in school or public libraries, while majority of employers require a Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited program for professional librarian positions.

The Librarian Certification and Programs

ALA or American Library Association accredited education programs are mainly focused on teaching information specialists and librarians about what to expect in varied work settings such as in academic libraries, corporate libraries, medical libraries, or school libraries. In this light, those who want more options should take ALA accredited librarian programs. In addition, these generally satisfy school librarians’ certification requirements in the specific state they work in, but not in all states in the country.

On the other hand, the NCATE or National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education likewise accredits librarian programs, with most of them leading to an MS in Education, with a school librarianship specialization. Those who are set on becoming school librarians may want to check out this option. States may also accredit programs for different types of librarianships so it is recommended that first check your state’s requirements prior to enrolling in a specific education program.

You should know that librarians who graduate from programs accredited by ALA generally have more flexibility in terms of work positions and library types they can pursue once they become certified. This is because accreditation from ALA means that a librarianship program has successfully passed a self assessment process, meets American Library Association and Committee on Accreditation standards, and has been properly evaluated by governing agencies.
